Introduction of book reads:
Modern life with innovative technologies, ways of communicating and conveniences has opened up many new opportunities to experience great things. But with this abundance of choice, as our lives have become busier and busier and faster and faster, we need to trade off having one experience over another.
This can be daunting to many and can in fact lead to a real sense of anxiety. Caterina Fake, on her online blog, in 2011 spoke about FOMO or the Fear Of Missing Out – it is the fear of missing out on something more interesting, exciting or better than what we’re currently doing.
Social media can be quite an addiction which sees us constantly checking our tweets and seeing what others are up to through their Facebook news feeds. It is also very easy for people to be able to self-edit what they broadcast, creating the picture that everything in their life is perfect. Herein lies the danger that if we don’t read between the lines we may always think others are doing something more interesting and exciting than we are at this very moment. It can also create a warped sense of reality because it may seem that everyone is always happier than we are and oftentimes having a better time.
Focusing on what everyone else is doing rather than enjoying what you are doing in this very moment often diminishes the experience to be had from this present moment. Walking the dog or going for a swim , making a healthy meal or hiking through the forest is much more exhilarating when we are present to it. An extreme example of the distractions we put in front of us is texting, tweeting or checking our Facebook account while driving. This can and has tragically lead to fatal consequences.
This book is about living mindfully. It is about enjoying what is in front of us right now. Online tech blogger, Anil Dash, a friend of Caterina Fake, coined the acronym JOMO, the Joy Of Missing Out, as being the ‘blissful, serene enjoyment in knowing, and celebrating, that there are folks out there having the time of their life at something you might have loved to, but are simply skipping.’ After a month of being offline following the birth of his son, he came to the realisation that he happily hadn’t missed anything at all.
JOMO is about being comfortable in the choices we make and being present to the joyful moments that we have chosen. Be grateful that we live in an age that offers so much of an abundance of opportunities to experience.
A good habit may be to go on a SMF (Social Media Fast) – simply switch off your smart phone over the weekend and enjoy what you are doing right now. Give yourself a daycation. A day where you switch off your phone and your mind and become fully immersed in whatever you want to do for that day, even if it is doing very little like pottering around the house, maybe running yourself a bubble bath, spending quality time with your loved ones, or watching re-runs of old television shows dressed in your comfy pjs while sprawled on the couch or rugged up in bed.
This book makes the perfect gift to remind you to slow down and enjoy the present moment and in turn enhance your health, happiness and sense of well being. Life is full of choices and opportunities, but the best choice is always to enjoy what is in front of you right now.
May you find joy in living in the present moment.

DID YOU KNOW?
When you purchase this book, you plant 2 trees in Madagascar. That’s right, for every book you purchase you are helping to make a dramatic impact in the lives of the beautiful wildlife and the people that call this magical island home. Madagascar is the fourth largest island on Earth and over 80% of it’s wildlife are found nowhere else, including all of the world’s lemurs, most of which are critically endangered. Approximately 95% of Madagascar’s forests have been destroyed and many of the people that live there are very poor. Planting trees restores the environment and helps protect the wildlife, but it also gives the people an income and allows them to put food on their plates and send their children to school.
