Introduction of book reads:
We All Have Dog Days
Dogs have their days too. You know those days. Mornings where you just can’t seem to get out of bed. Where even sunshine feels like rain. Days when you finally do summon the strength to face another day but nothing seems to go right. These are the days you wish you could just curl up in a ball so small that you would cease to exist. Don’t feel like you’re alone. We all have days like this. It is part of the condition of life. If you are breathing you are bound to have moments of pleasure and days that you just want to forget. Have you ever noticed that dogs actually do get down contrary to common knowledge? A dog feeling down is a sorry sight. Those sad puppy dog eyes are enough to melt even the sternest of resolves.
When they are sad they are sad. Who has ever heard the mournful howl of a dog feeling depressed? It echoes through the neighbourhood. And guess what often happens next? Other dogs join in to offer their sympathy and support. Other dogs, total strangers that no doubt have never met this sad canine before.
You see, dogs are not one to hold in their feelings. They understand that a good howl can clear the air. Keeping feelings bottled up will turn you blue. So always remember, don’t keep your feelings bottled up. Instead express them. Sometimes a good scream, a flood of tears, a brisk walk or a punching bag can help clear the air so that you can feel good again. Emotions are literally, ‘energy in motion’, whether positive or negative, they are energy. Often the best way to shift uncomfortable emotions is to express them so that they may pass and let light in for positive ones again.
Like dogs, humans are pack animals. And it is when we are feeling the blues that we need to remember that we do not need to suffer in silence. In fact, surround yourself with friends and family who will support and listen to you. Even a total stranger may be the perfect sounding board. Don’t ever feel embarrassed or ashamed to express what you are going through with others. Remember, it is a condition of life that if we are breathing we will all feel different emotions throughout our life.
Dogs are great teachers if we take the time to really take notice of them. The biggest lesson that we humans can take from our canine companions is to let go of thoughts that no longer serve us. When a dog’s master comes home, all is forgotten as he wags his tail and jumps all over him excitedly. Dogs have a selective memory. They learn from the past, remember the good times and forget the not so pleasant times. They know that life is always now. Dwelling in the past only robs the joy of the present moment. Let the wisdom of dogs infuse through every pore as you pause for a moment and take in their greatest gift to humanity – the gift of presence.
DID YOU KNOW?
When you purchase this book, you plant 2 trees in Madagascar. That’s right, for every book you purchase you are helping to make a dramatic impact in the lives of the beautiful wildlife and the people that call this magical island home. Madagascar is the fourth largest island on Earth and over 80% of it’s wildlife are found nowhere else, including all of the world’s lemurs, most of which are critically endangered. Approximately 95% of Madagascar’s forests have been destroyed and many of the people that live there are very poor. Planting trees restores the environment and helps protect the wildlife, but it also gives the people an income and allows them to put food on their plates and send their children to school.
