Heidi and I have been super crazy busy with a number of projects, the latest being the renovation of a townhouse on the Sunshine Coast, a two and a half hour drive away. On top of that I am stupidly busy with work and it is an insane juggling act at the moment. Doing long hours it is easy to get down and wonder what is it all for.
I am at my most creative when I am really busy with things. Somehow, it brings out the best in me. One of the things that I have learned over the years is to be super aware of what is right in front of me right now. This keeps me balanced.
The Little Things
For instance, we spent the weekend doing a ‘The Block’ style mad makeover of the back and front yards of the townhouse. We landscaped with pebbles, soil and bark chips, adding plants and pots and totally transforming the place. My back was so so sore from hauling buckets of soil and pebbles, planting ground covers, and moving pots that I was at times crawling around on all fours with back pain ( I realised that I am not as young as I THINK I am). We managed to complete the project and be amazed with what we had achieved.
I haven’t quite got to the end of the story yet. We had to make numerous trips to Bunnings and the local nursery and these gave us ample opportunities to ‘see the roses’ right in front of us. We’d notice for instance, as we drove along the Sunshine Highway, grey kangaroos in a big open field and like excited children we’d look for them on every trip.
Then we’d cross the bridge over the Maroochy River before we get into Maroochydore, and there would be pelicans preening themselves or sleeping on the towering lamp posts on the bridge. Also, in front of the townhouse, we’d see a kookaburra being harassed by a family of mynahs, or watch a bush turkey straddle the fence between properties.
These little gems make us stop for a moment to catch our breath at just how lucky to have been to be able to appreciate these little moments.
Chasing The Dream of Happiness
We are often so busy in our lives that we even fail to witness the beauty right in front of us now. It is easy to become so wrapped up in the dream of chasing happiness that we forget that all we have is here and now. Happiness is now.
The Happiness Habit
Rather than chasing happiness, make it a habit, starting from today, to go out of your way to notice those little moments in your life right now that make life grand. Happiness lives in the here and now. Stop any excuses about how busy you are. We are all busy.
Live Life Now
I started this habit a number of years ago when I was 39 and contemplating the big 4-0 and I looked back at the years that had went past and how quickly that they had gone and many of the memories were a blur as one day melded into the other. On that day I promised that I would not let another day go by without having proof that for that day I had lived. For me, living meant having proof that I had stopped for a moment, no matter how busy I was to experience joy in something right in front of me. As proof, I took a photo each day so that at the end of the year I could look back a remember each and every day of that year and know that even for a few moments in my busy day that i had lived for that day.
See The Roses
Pay attention. Find joy and appreciation in these little things. To smell the roses you must first see that they are there.
The Happiest Moments Are Often Those Right In Front Of Us
The Happiest Moments is a book we wrote that was inspired by these special little moments in our lives that give us great joy. In this book you will find tips and thoughts that will inspire you to notice the roses in your day no matter how busy you are and also to sometimes take the time to slow down. To say ‘no’ to certain activities, and experience the Joy Of Missing Out, or JOMO, as has become an acronym for enjoying what is right in front of you right now.
